Hotel in Katsuragi
Located in Katsuragi, 27 km from Tama Museum, Sanso Amanosato provides accommodation with free bikes, free private parking, a garden and a bar. This was an exceptional property in every way. Though the rooms are European style, the singular cabins, the passage ways, the main building, all have a very Japanese architectural feel. This is located about 20km from Koyasan, and sits among rice paddies just a bike ride from a local shrine. It gives you the chance to glide along on deserted roads and happen upon a major pilgramage shrine along the Kumano Kodo. The Kaiseki meal was superb, with about 10 courses of sublime cooking and service of the highest order. The staff may have been a little nervous as we don't speak Japanese, but they fared well. The presentation was, as is the Japanese way, giving a nod to the autumn season with fall flowers and leaves presenting the food as art. The Onsen were private so that couples can enjoy with eachother, three possibilities were available, with small gardens outside each. Our suite also had a huge round tub to enjoy as well. The bathroom was of exceptional design. We had a hedge of blooming flowers outside the porch doors where beautiful and unusual butterflies were feeding.

buy the 5 day JR pass and 3 day wakayama bus pass. Prepare to spend 3-4 days to walk the pilgrimage trail
Hongu is the town right in the middle of the peninsula of Wakayama that sits in the center of many of the Kumano Kodo hikes. Beautiful all around with tons of great trails and hikes to do and sights to see, especially Nachi Falls. Tips for those wanting to travel in Hongu: -Have tons of 100,1000 yen currency. In order to get around the Hongu area requires intermitten buses that can get expensive. Be prepared to spend up to 1250 JPY for each leg of the bus. Plan your trip as there as well, as there are big gaps in the bus times (especially around noon).
Wakayama
The room was very nice, clean and comfortable. the facilities were super clean and there were free bike rentals which was amazing! Towels were included and there were enough showers. The only thing was the lack of a communal space but it wasnt too bad. The location was really good (20min walk to Wakayama JR station or theres a bus that takes you there) and there were many restaurants and shops in the area. There is a convenience store right beside the hostel.
I liked that it was close to the station and was down the main street. I loved the sauna kept at 100 degrees C. and the 10 degrees C. cold rinse. The breakfast had a lot of Japanese foods to sample as well as some western food. Washing machine is free but dryer requires coins. Wakayama is a big city with wide streets and traffic, location is near to bus stops and one day trips with trains are easily negotiated.
I must've paid for the room upgrade because I was on one of the highest floors with a view of Wakayama castle. I could've spent all day looking out the window. And then the castle lit up at night as well. The restaurant was spacious and the breakfast buffet included an omelet bar and cereal as well as the usual Japanese and Western fare.
Tanabe
The location is perfect; it is only a 5 minute walk to the Kii Tanabe station where you would have access to all kinds of transportation. The guesthouse is actually a traditional Japanese residence which has a very authentic feel. The host is kind and multilingual. It is an excellent base to explore the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture.
Wakayama
Awesome hostel. Had possibly the best coffe I've had in Japan at the bar, as well as some crazy good basque burnt cheese cake. The bar is beatiful and the hostel itself is very nice as well. Rooms are super big. Location is very convenient, not far from the train station and close to Wakayama Castle and a lot of great restaurants.
The hotel was very close to the Wakayama train station. The check-in counter was on the ground floor which was very convenient. The lobby was spacious and grand. The hotel provided a complimentary Japanese newspaper. There were many choices, Japanese curry rice and Western style bread and butter, at the buffet style breakfast.
Tanabe
Lovely to stay and enjoy the delicious food and tranquility. I only wish we had stayed longer. Very interesting to hear Giovanni's story of developing the accommodation and preserving Japanese culture in Wakayama. Comfortable bed and space. We were nice and warm despite the freezing temperatures outside!
Lovely room, comfortable bed, bath and room had great view over marina. Friendly staff. Easy to get to by public transport. Good place to relax, an onsen nearby. However a bit far for seeing Wakayama castle etc. I think we were the only International travellers here.
Wakayama
The location was great and the room and services were fantastic. The location was great and wakayamas transportation system makes it very easy to get around by bus. The staff was upset helpful and the common room was very nice as well
This apartment was amazing value for money! I only stayed a couple days, but it would be a great place to use as a base for exploring Wakayama. The apartment was clean and nicely decorated, and the kitchen was well equipped.
The location is just next to Wakayama Station. Room is spacious by Japanese standard and very clean. The staff is cordial and my luggage was sent to my room.
Very big and clean rooms! Near JR Wakayama station, so easy to reach. If you come by car, free parking spaces are available. Rooms had all we needed.
Great ametities, including free breakfast and drinks. The location was also good, walkable distance from the Wakayama station.
The location is great next to Wakayama Shi station, shopping mall and municipal library. The room is comfortable .
Typical Smile Hotel with efficient service and a great window view of Wakayama Castle.
Once in a lifetime experience. the activities such as fire ritual, meditation and morning service, night tour are really impressive. Dinner experience also exceeds our expectation. highly recommend this to all who is interested in culture, buddhism and Japan tourism.
Dinner and Breakfast buffet is very nice. Very nice staff and professional service.
We LOVED this huge seaside hotel-- especially the cave onsen. It's got some of that Japan bubble aesthetic, as it was opened in 1956 and updated throughout Japan's boom times. Our room had an incredible view of the sea, and it was fun to just roam around the hotel. Wish we could have stayed longer!
The host Jian was amazing and the food cooked by his wife and daughter was exceptional, both for the dinner and in the next day's bento boxes for our day walking the Kumano Kodo
